From The Country Barn – Elkton, KY
When summer heat turns up the pressure, our plants feel it too. At The Country Barn, we’re here to help you recognize the signs of heat stress and take quick, effective action to help your garden recover and thrive. Whether you’re growing Proven Winners, Endless Summer Hydrangeas, or native pollinator plants through our Plant a Pollinator program, here’s what to watch for and what you can do.
Signs of Heat Stress
Look out for these early symptoms in your plants:
-
Leaf Scorch – Dry, crispy edges or browning between leaf veins
-
Wilting – Droopy leaves, even after watering
-
Leaf Drop – Sudden loss of foliage as the plant tries to conserve energy
-
Slow Growth – Plants seem to stall out or stop blooming
-
Sunburned Leaves – White or bleached spots from intense sun exposure
How to Help Plants Recover
🌿 Water Smart
Water deeply, early in the morning, to let roots soak it up before the heat of the day. Avoid shallow, frequent watering, which encourages weak roots.
🌿 Mulch Matters
Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch to keep soil temperatures down and moisture in. Our garden center has a full selection of mulch to suit your needs.
🌿 Provide Shade
Temporary shade cloth or strategic placement of potted plants can give sensitive varieties a break from intense sun. Proven Winners and Endless Summer Hydrangeas especially appreciate some afternoon relief.
🌿 Hold Off on Fertilizer
Avoid fertilizing during extreme heat—it can stress plants further. Wait until temps moderate, then feed with a gentle, organic formula.
🌿 Trim Wisely
Prune away scorched or dead leaves to reduce plant stress and encourage new growth. Be careful not to cut too aggressively in the heat.
